The CAYL Principals Fellowship is an exciting, progressive professional development opportunity for leaders of early care and education programs in school systems!

As states move toward systems of universal preschool, the CAYL Principals Fellowship provides cohorts of educational leaders with experiences that help them to design, implement and supervise the essential elements of quality for young children. Fellows become skilled in promoting educational excellence and providing the foundations of educational attainment for young children.

Join us at the CAYL Principals Conference, July 11-14, 2010 in Columbus, OH. All Principals serving children age 3 through 3rd grade are invited to attend. Click here for more info!

CAYL Principal Fellows learn how to strengthen the vision and capacity necessary to impact change in schools and communities. The Fellowship is a very supportive and engaging learning environment, structured as follows:

  • Summer conference/residency with other Principals and leaders;
  • Site visits to multiple schools throughout the school year;
  • Workshops on the pedagogies of early care and education seminars with other Principals and leaders;
  • Opportunities to present and advocate for quality early care and education;
  • Distance learning activities.

CAYL Principal Fellows increase effectiveness through active engagement and sustained reflection throughout the Fellowship experience. Fellows will:

  • Improve knowledge and skills about early childhood education;
  • Acquire knowledge about early learning standards, appropriate expectations, appropriate inputs and outcomes from early childhood programs;
  • Strengthen school, family and community partnerships;
  • Develop relationships with other elementary and early education Principals who serve children under five years old;
  • Hear and be mentored by outstanding national speakers and leaders in the field.

Recent History of the CAYL Principals Fellowship:

Starting in July 2006-2007, the CAYL Principals Fellowship has served elementary and early childhood Principals and Directors from eleven school systems across the state of Massachusetts. In the summer of 2007, the Fellowship collaborated with the National Association of Elementary School Principals to offer a summer institute to 200 Principals from across the country. During 2007-2008, the Fellowship cohort consisted of nine Principals from the Boston Public Schools. Moving forward into 2008-2009, the Fellowship will include sixteen Principals from the Boston Public Schools.

The Fellowship has developed a strong collaborative relationship with BPS early childhood leaders. Boston Public Schools has worked with teachers, families, and facilities over the years to expand early childhood enrollment. Recognizing that it takes a specialized approach to educate very young children, BPS and the Principals Fellowship aim to provide Principals with expanded support and new tools to be effective and productive instructional leaders.

Since its inception, the CAYL Principals Fellowship has encouraged and facilitated Principals to network, learn from each other, and visit successful early childhood models. The professional bonding experience was best described by Dr. Carol Johnson, Superintendent of the Boston Public Schools, during a meeting with the 2007-2008 Fellows, “This is a very powerful group!” The CAYL Principals Fellowship demonstrates a commitment to working within communities of color and linguistically diverse and economically underserved communities and schools. Principals who have completed their Fellowship experience continue to participate with our network and CAYL Institute activities.
