CAYL Nellie Mae Scholar Jillayne Flanders has been named Massachusetts Outstanding Principal of the Year. Her award was presented on May 5, 2010 by Mitchell Chester, Commissioner of the Massachusetts Department of Elementary and Secondary Education. Congratulations!

Scholastic's website has an article titled "Mr. Teacher," which describes the lack of male teachers in schools. CAYL President Valora Washington is quoted.

The New America Foundation released a report titled  A Next Social Contract for the Primary Years of Education, which recommends policy frameworks to create PreK-3^rd approaches that fix our fragmented educational pipeline.

The Government Accountability Office (GAO) has released a report titled Overview of K-12 and Early Childhood Education Programs. The report is intended to brief legistlators about the federal expenditure on K-12 and early childhood education programs.

The Michigan Early Childhood Investment Corporation released a report titled, "Steps Forward," written by CAYL President Valora Washington. The reports discusses the need for better college-level training and higher salaries for Michigan students who want to enter the early childhood profession, and the barriers that prevent that from happening.

Worcester Magazine highlighted 2009 CAYL Schott Fellow Isabel Gonzalez in an article titled, "Big Thinkers." Isabel is featured in the section "The Inside Outsider."

The Massachusetts Budget and Policy Center released a report titled "An Unstable Ladder: How the Fiscal Crisis is Threatening Education and Work Support Programs for Many Women." This report examines how these programs support the participation of women in the workforce, and how they have been affected by state budget cuts.

Today, the Boston Globe has printed two articles relative to education. The first, House swiftly OKs sweeping education measure, reports that the state House of Representatives passed an education bill that aims to overhaul the state’s worst schools and expand charter schools. The second, A rescue mission for education, is an editorial by Governor Deval Patrick.

The University of Washington’s Center for the Study of Teaching and Policy has released two reports that tackle issues important to urban district and school leaders:

• How Leaders Invest Staffing Resources for Learning Improvement  describes how four school districts have handled teacher and resource distribution to boost student learning and education fairness citywide.

 

• Leadership for Learning Improvement in Urban Schools looks at how teamwork, goal-sharing, conversation and other devices can help principals, supervisors and “teacher-leaders” work more effectively to improve teaching and learning.

Marianna Islam, Assistant Vice President of United Way of Central Massachusetts and a 2009 CAYL Schott Fellow, wrote an article for her organization in response to some of the backlash against the new regulations set forth by the Massachusetts Department of Early Education and Care. Today, the Boston Globe ran an article titled "A year after the election, Obama focuses on schools." The article talked about Obama's visit to Wright Middle School in
Madison, Wisconsin, where he spoke of his wish for public education to become a pillar of the new economy.
