JOIN THE CAYL INSTITUTE FOR THE 2010 INTERNATIONAL STUDY TOUR TO THE DOMINICAN REPUBLIC

October 9-14, 2010

Children and families from the Dominican Republic are one of the largest and growing groups of Hispanic immigrants settling in Massachusetts and the USA.

The CAYL Institute strives to better understand the academic, social, emotional, policy and practice issues encountered by Dominican children in both the Dominican Republic and in the USA.

The primary purpose of the CAYL Dominican Republic Study Tour is to provide an opportunity for participants to engage in a cultural experience that will help educators gain a better understanding of the prior learning experiences of children and their families who have immigrated from the Dominican Republic to Massachusetts and other states.

This study tour will provide insight and information in order to better serve Dominican children and families in Massachusetts and across the United States. Participants will have opportunities to:

  • Investigate and experience the history, culture and the complexities of life in the Dominican Republic with an eye toward lessons learned for the experiences of immigrant children and families in the United States.
  • Examine and learn about early care and education systems in the Dominican Republic.
  • Identify and reflect upon effective educational policies and practices in Dominican Republic that could support children and students of Dominican descent in American schools.
  • Share ideas with school leaders and educators in Dominican Republic about their policies, practices and workforce development strategies through conversations with teachers, parents, volunteers and area leaders about their experiences.
  • Understand and explore systems established in Dominican Republic that might enhance opportunities for children and students across the educational continuum.
